DIY: Thrifted Vanity Decor

20140423-044415.jpg

Every girl’s vanity/dresser should be customized to match her personality. A great way to do so is thrifting. By finding unique decor you can achieve a fun vanity space all your own, and on
a low budget!

Look for items that can be converted into something else. For example, I took a shabby chic toothbrush holder and turned it into a makeup brush organizer! I also found an awesome
mirror to use as a vanity tray. Just refresh your perspective and you’ll find there’s tons you can do with regular household objects!

Simple Mani: The Rainbow Fish

Here’s a simple mani that’s quick and easy! All you need is a nail dotter (or a bobby pin or something with a round end) cling wrap, and multiple nail polish colors! Check out Juleps awesome variety here.

On the cling wrap place a dab of each color you’re using. Start with a bright color and dot randomly on your nails. Repeat with all your colors, alternating your neutrals with your brights. Be sure to cover the tips of your nails. Then, take a glitter polish and dot over one of your bright colors. Finish with a top coat and voila!

Beauty Review: Ciaté Colourfoil Nails

Ciaté is known for its fun and eccentric nail trends, most of which are more pretty than practical. So when I stumbled upon this nail kit I knew I had to try it! It comes with a nail poilsh, multiple foils, foil glue and plastic nails to swatch.

The manicure itself is fairly easy, however it can be time consuming depending on the effect you want to achieve. You paint your nails and let them dry. Then you take the foil glue, dab it on in the desired area and let it partially dry. While its tacky, you place the foil shiny side up on the glue, press down and remove quickly. You’ll be left with an abstract sparkly piece of foil! Repeat the above steps several times on the same nail with different foils to create a mosaic look. Then, seal with a top coat.

I adore this manicure. I think it’s much more practical than the caviar or velvet nail kits. My only issue with it is that it lasted one day. I definitely recommend multiple top coats, and I think that will solve the one-day problem. Next time I plan to do the foils over a black nail for a more intense result.

Sandy Nails

I’ve recently tried various name-brand liquid sand nail polish and didn’t get the hype. Well, I came across Forever 21’s brand today while at work and thought I’d give their unique shades a try. Definitely a smart buy! The Love & Beauty brand’s “Sand Lacquer” really delivers. It leaves a perfect sand texture on your nails while keeping the glitter and sparkle in tact; and, the gold shade is very flattering on all skin tones! It’s a very pretty manicure that takes less than 5 minutes and costs $3. I suggest you give it a try!

Long Lasting Liner

After some great debate with myself, I decided what I would use the last of my Spephora gift card on. Waterproof liquid liner. I figured since the main focus of my daily makeup routine is all about my eyes, I should try something “high-end.”

This Urban Decay 24 Hour liquid liner is totally amazing. At 19$ it doesn’t kill your wallet, but it is a little pricey for an eyeliner in my book. However, I really can’t get over and how perfect it stays all day long—and its the blackest liquid liner I’ve seen! I was concerned it would be difficult to remove, but it was no match for my Olay moisturizing face wash. I definitely recommend you use this product if you’re a cat eye connoisseur, it really is 24 hours of statement liner!

Sprinkles & Splatter: Nail Art at Home

20130326-204751.jpg

If you’re a fan of nail art and follow countless nail accounts on Instagram, you’ve seen the crazy cool nail polishes from various Etsy shops. Nail sprinkles are one of the latest nail trends and the quickest way to get a chic manicure in minutes! Its equivalent to nail confetti in a bottle, coming in all shapes, colors, and sizes.

I follow MrsLochness on Instagram and one of her posts featured this nail polish! I’ve been searching for a sprinkley nail polish that’s available anywhere besides Etsy, and when I noticed the bottle said Hard Candy, I knew I could find it at Walmart.

This nail polish, “Black Tie Optional,” is the absolute perfect finishing touch to any basic manicure and it’s totally on trend with its black and white color palette. What’s even better is that it’s a matte confetti so it has a unique paint splatter effect! It’s also not super base heavy like most glitter polishes, so it goes on thin and dries almost instantly. Try it on pastels for the best contrast and watch your mani transform!

Must-Try Manis

Nail art is so much fun, and there is a lot of designs you can easily do yourself at home. Skip the salon and check out my latest manicures!

Try using metallic Sharpies to make dainty patterns or prints. Just draw directly onto a painted, dry nail and cover with a clear coat! Caviar beads are also a quick fix to fill that nail trend crave. Just mix multiple colors into a bowl and sprinkle on top of a clear coat or nail glue coat. You can buy your own at Joann Fabrics, PacSun, The Dollar Tree, or Claire’s. Confetti nails are one of my personal favorites because there are so many ways to sparkle your nails! Do just the tips, half moons, or the whole nail! Or stay classic with the French manicure. Change them up with metallic finishes or angled tips! It’s a great illusion to make short nails look longer too!

Peplums Please

If you’re looking to add some fun to your drab winter wardrobe, look no further than peplum tops, dresses, and skirts. I thought the trend would have fizzled out by the end of summer, but lately I’ve seen them in every store at the mall and I love the fun variations they’ve come in for the winter season!

Charlotte Russe has tons of peplum tops, skirts, and dresses and many are currently on sale! I suggest shopping for long sleeved peplum tops, or unique ones with fun accents like leather collars, lace panels, or metallic threads! Same goes for skirts and dresses, look
for something appropriate for winter yet still has a fun and trendy aspect to it.

Peplums are very flattering for all
figures so you have to pay close attention to fit. Make sure that the peplum hits you at the correct placement of your natural waist. This zones in on the smallest part of your torso. Also, there should be enough flare and fullness to the peplum so that it balances out the fitted top. Bust darts are imperative to a well fitted peplum. And again, same goes for skirts and dresses. If the peplum is not landing in your waist, it will enhance your shape instead of flatter it.

Once you find the perfect peplum, dress it up! Peplum tops look the best with fitted bottoms, ie: pencil skirts or skinny jeans. If you’re worried about flattering your body, stick with darker shades. For skirts, make sure the top you choose is fitted enough and does not overpower the flare of the peplum. You can have fun by choosing a different color than the skirt too! Now, accessorize! I paired mine with pink accessories to play up the black and white look I was going for. Just make sure it’s all balanced: Pink loafers with a pink SKINNY belt topped off with pink lipstick is perfect way to play up
your peplum, AND in all the right places to ensure your accentuating your body correctly!

If you’re bored with your manicure, bling it up with a trendy nail ring! It instantly adds glam to your nails without a trip to the nail salon! This one is from Claire’s and was only $5.50. They can be difficult to keep on if you’re doing something hands on, but they’re great for a night out or shopping trip! If you’re a fashion addict, this is definitely a fun accessory to have in your jewelry box!
