DIY: Thrifted Vanity Decor

20140423-044415.jpg

Every girl’s vanity/dresser should be customized to match her personality. A great way to do so is thrifting. By finding unique decor you can achieve a fun vanity space all your own, and on
a low budget!

Look for items that can be converted into something else. For example, I took a shabby chic toothbrush holder and turned it into a makeup brush organizer! I also found an awesome
mirror to use as a vanity tray. Just refresh your perspective and you’ll find there’s tons you can do with regular household objects!

Simple Mani: The Rainbow Fish

Here’s a simple mani that’s quick and easy! All you need is a nail dotter (or a bobby pin or something with a round end) cling wrap, and multiple nail polish colors! Check out Juleps awesome variety here.

On the cling wrap place a dab of each color you’re using. Start with a bright color and dot randomly on your nails. Repeat with all your colors, alternating your neutrals with your brights. Be sure to cover the tips of your nails. Then, take a glitter polish and dot over one of your bright colors. Finish with a top coat and voila!

Clear as Crystal

A huge trend we are going to be seeing hit stores this spring/summer is lucite accents. The best way to incorporate this trend in everyday outfits is through accessories. Rocking a full vinyl skirt or jacket might be a little too over the top for most people so try jewelry, purses or shoes first!

Clear bracelets detailed with gemstones are a great way to modernize a sleek ensemble. Same with clear cuffs and chunky rings. The bracelets above are also mixed with antique gold metals, tying in the Art Deco trend that is popular.

Lucite footwear is another way to wear this fun fad. Clear details like the ankle straps, embellishments or heels can really update and transform your look. The heels above from Forever 21 feature black pleather ankle straps along with a clear plastic foot strap, accompanied by the chunky lucite heel. The black pleather keeps the overall shoe balanced. Too much lucite will send the wrong message and could be mistaken for a different kind of footwear, if you know what I mean!

As long as you keep it basic and sleek, you can’t go wrong with clear accessories. A little goes a long way and with this trend it’s safe to say less is more!

Sprinkles & Splatter: Nail Art at Home

20130326-204751.jpg

If you’re a fan of nail art and follow countless nail accounts on Instagram, you’ve seen the crazy cool nail polishes from various Etsy shops. Nail sprinkles are one of the latest nail trends and the quickest way to get a chic manicure in minutes! Its equivalent to nail confetti in a bottle, coming in all shapes, colors, and sizes.

I follow MrsLochness on Instagram and one of her posts featured this nail polish! I’ve been searching for a sprinkley nail polish that’s available anywhere besides Etsy, and when I noticed the bottle said Hard Candy, I knew I could find it at Walmart.

This nail polish, “Black Tie Optional,” is the absolute perfect finishing touch to any basic manicure and it’s totally on trend with its black and white color palette. What’s even better is that it’s a matte confetti so it has a unique paint splatter effect! It’s also not super base heavy like most glitter polishes, so it goes on thin and dries almost instantly. Try it on pastels for the best contrast and watch your mani transform!

The “It” Heel

Target is one of my favorite places to shop, they always have interesting things you never expect to find. Well, when I saw a preview of the Prabal Gurung line that was going to be featured, I knew I had to have these heels! They are inspired by a ghilley, an Irish dance shoe. They are chic, trendy, and modern; a perfect finishing touch to any ensemble! Right now they are on clearance for 27$, so grab your own pair quick! They’re sure to be your go-to heels this spring and summer.

My Latest Finds

Some of my favorite pieces I have are cheap thrills I’ve stumbled upon at Plato’s Closet. You can really find crazy bargains that have been reduced over 50% from their original retail price. My latest trip there brought me to these two treasures; a Candie’s blazer and Asos top.

The blazer is faux satin with the perfect floral print for spring. Printed blazers are going to be a huge trend this season and I definitely snatched this up the second I saw it, and for 8$ how could I say no?! The Asos top is tweed in the front and black fleece in the back. It has faux leather and chiffon cuffs and collar, with a gold zipper going down center back. It was too unique to put back, and only 12$! Tweed is always in style and this top is going to be a great transitional piece from winter to spring here in temperamental Buffalo.

I definitely recommend you try Plato’s Closet BEFORE you hit the mall with your tax return or latest paycheck. You definitely will not be leaving empty handed!

Try the Talon

I’ve been a huge fan of the talon nail trend that we have even seeing for the past couple seasons. However, I’m not really a fan of getting acrylic nails or spending a lot of money for something I may not end up liking. So when I stumbled upon this nail ring set at Claire’s, I knew I had to get them! They allow me to try the talon trend without actually dedicating myself to it. And after seeing my own hands with talon shaped nails, I may decide on getting them done!

Goldfinger

If you’re bored with your manicure, bling it up with a trendy nail ring! It instantly adds glam to your nails without a trip to the nail salon! This one is from Claire’s and was only $5.50. They can be difficult to keep on if you’re doing something hands on, but they’re great for a night out or shopping trip! If you’re a fashion addict, this is definitely a fun accessory to have in your jewelry box!

The Foolproof Ombré Mani

20121030-235519.jpg

I have tried countless times to do the infamous ombré manicure and have failed horribly. Until today. After reading so many tutorials on using a damp makeup sponge, and layering color upon color at once, I figured something wasn’t right: the moisture level!

Here’s what you’ll need: a clear coat, 3 nail polish colors and one makeup sponge.

1) Start with your base cost. After it dries, choose one of three colors and paint both hands. LET IT DRY COMPLETELY!

2) After, choose your second color and paint a small section of one side of your DRY makeup sponge. Dab the sponge halfway down each of your nails. It’s okay if it’s a little messy.

3) Repeat step 2 with your third color, dabbing onto the tip of your nails. Let the colors set.

4) Now step 4 is very important because it will blend your ombré manicure. If you did steps 1-3 correctly, your nails will look like very bright, blunt stripes. Take your makeup sponge and rip it in half, creating a textured edge! Simply repeat steps 2 and 3 but using the bumpy, textured side of the sponge. This should make your mani look like a continuous gradient.

5) Finish it off with a clear top coat, and make sure to leave plenty of dry time!
