DIY: Thrifted Vanity Decor

20140423-044415.jpg

Every girl’s vanity/dresser should be customized to match her personality. A great way to do so is thrifting. By finding unique decor you can achieve a fun vanity space all your own, and on
a low budget!

Look for items that can be converted into something else. For example, I took a shabby chic toothbrush holder and turned it into a makeup brush organizer! I also found an awesome
mirror to use as a vanity tray. Just refresh your perspective and you’ll find there’s tons you can do with regular household objects!

Simple Mani: The Rainbow Fish

20140421-103519.jpg

Here’s a simple mani that’s quick and easy! All you need is a nail dotter (or a bobby pin or something with a round end) cling wrap, and multiple nail polish colors! Check out Juleps awesome variety here.

On the cling wrap place a dab of each color you’re using. Start with a bright color and dot randomly on your nails. Repeat with all your colors, alternating your neutrals with your brights. Be sure to cover the tips of your nails. Then, take a glitter polish and dot over one of your bright colors. Finish with a top coat and voila!

Beauty Review: Ciaté Colourfoil Nails

Ciaté is known for its fun and eccentric nail trends, most of which are more pretty than practical. So when I stumbled upon this nail kit I knew I had to try it! It comes with a nail poilsh, multiple foils, foil glue and plastic nails to swatch.

The manicure itself is fairly easy, however it can be time consuming depending on the effect you want to achieve. You paint your nails and let them dry. Then you take the foil glue, dab it on in the desired area and let it partially dry. While its tacky, you place the foil shiny side up on the glue, press down and remove quickly. You’ll be left with an abstract sparkly piece of foil! Repeat the above steps several times on the same nail with different foils to create a mosaic look. Then, seal with a top coat.

I adore this manicure. I think it’s much more practical than the caviar or velvet nail kits. My only issue with it is that it lasted one day. I definitely recommend multiple top coats, and I think that will solve the one-day problem. Next time I plan to do the foils over a black nail for a more intense result.

Must-Try Manis

Nail art is so much fun, and there is a lot of designs you can easily do yourself at home. Skip the salon and check out my latest manicures!

Try using metallic Sharpies to make dainty patterns or prints. Just draw directly onto a painted, dry nail and cover with a clear coat! Caviar beads are also a quick fix to fill that nail trend crave. Just mix multiple colors into a bowl and sprinkle on top of a clear coat or nail glue coat. You can buy your own at Joann Fabrics, PacSun, The Dollar Tree, or Claire’s. Confetti nails are one of my personal favorites because there are so many ways to sparkle your nails! Do just the tips, half moons, or the whole nail! Or stay classic with the French manicure. Change them up with metallic finishes or angled tips! It’s a great illusion to make short nails look longer too!

Last Minute Gifting

If you’re finding yourself low on time this holiday season or even just low on cash, there are still some great gift ideas available! Gift cards are always a last resort, but before you surrender to the ubiquitous plastic present, check out these ideas!

Nail Kit: Nail art has been huge this past year so make your own little kit like I did above! Pick out one or two nail-polishes and then find little add ons; stickers, rhinestones, a can of nailpolish quick-dry spray (3$ at Ulta), a cute nail file, or even magnetic nail polish. I used mini caviar bead bottles and glitter. Lauren Conrad just featured an INGENIUS nail necessity on her blog: metallic Sharpies. They are perfect for details and French tips, and they’re way cheaper than nail art pens. Wal-mart has a 3 pack of silver, gold and bronze for $3.87!

OR: go big and get an at home gel manicure startup kit!

Healthy Living: Great for any workout fein! Fill a small gym bag up with fun items; a neon sports bra, a jump rope, a fitness magazine, a water bottle, Gatorade packets, a protein bar, etc. My cousin just introduced me to THIS amazing water bottle. It has a filter at its base to infuse chunks of fruit or mint leaves into your water! Yum!

OR: go big and get a pair of running shoes or at-home weight set!

Makeup Maniac: Girls love receiving makeup, it’s just one less thing we have to buy every month or two! Pick one large gift idea like a MAC lipstick and fill a small makeup bag (1$ at the Dollar Tree) with little things like false lashes, eyeliner pencils or even sparkley bobby pins, hair ties and hair donut to make it a mini girls survival kit.

OR: go big and get a full beauty kit from Sephora or Macy’s!

“Reboot” your Wardrobe

20121029-223629.jpg

We all have old or bland items in our wardrobes that could use a little something more. Well, after I found these boots while on vacation in Key West for only $10, I knew I could easily personalize and update them! I made a quick trip to Joann Fabrics and headed toward the trim aisle. I then found 2 different fringe trims and black studs that I was instantly drawn to. After coupons the trims came to about $3! I used a combo of fabric glue and super glue I already had and attached the fringe and studs. I liked the boots before, but after I “rebooted” them, I LOVED them! So next time you clean out your closet, consider personalizing some “oldies but goodies” before tossing them, you’d be surprised what inspiration can come from the craft store!

So ColorFALL

20120924-184617.jpg

This fall/winter I’ve decided to try and wear bright colors as opposed to the typical dark depressing tones associated with the cold. So, I came up with this very cute, jcrew-ish outfit! The sweater is one of my favorite colors, chartreuse, and was only 13$ at Forever 21! From there, I paired it with casual boyfriend fit pants I thrifted, and my “librarian” herringbone bow heels! I topped it off with my very bright floral and pearl necklace as well as a pearl Betsey Johnson bracelet and earrings!

I suggest everyone try to incorporate a little bit of color into their outfits! The best way is through accessories like shoes, belts, and jewels. Definitely invest in something bright you know you can wear year round (mine is this necklace) and you’ll probably find that it can transform any basic outfit into a fabulous one!

Beauty Review: Claire’s Nail Stickers

20120923-204828.jpg

So I recently picked up some cool nail stickers at Claire’s for 1$ (on clearance) and I finally got the chance to try them out! I have to say I’m disappointed in the quality, however I can’t stay I didn’t expect it. Sally Hansen still offers the best nail stickers by far, but these Claires stickers do offer a better variety of fun accents like rhinestones and ombré! The problem is the stick of them, meaning there is almost none! The edges are also difficult to trim off and they leave a rough lip that attracts lint and fur. They lasted one day in total, which is obviously a bust. I do have to say that they would be great for a one day event like a prom, party, or wedding! Next time I find them on sale again, I’d like to try them out as accent strips by trimming them up and applying a topcoat! So, maybe give them a try and send your feedback!

Fall Florals

Many people believe florals are merely a spring trend. However, it is 100% possible to carry this trend throughout the year! Pick a floral that is black based, not white or pastel. Look for florals in rich colors and large print. Then pair it with a shade taken from the print itself. Add some fun gold accessories and voila, a perfect fall floral!

Pamper Yourself

Image

Gel manicures have been a popular trend hitting nail salons everywhere. Well, I have my own gel kit at home, Sensationail, but I never actually got the manicure done professionally. So, for my mom’s birthday we decided to have a mother-daughter mani/pedi night. I have to say, definitely worth the money! Gel manicures offer so many various colors, just as many as normal nail polishes. Here, I chose from the Gelish nail colors, opting for a basing pink with some sparkle!

I recommend anyone to try a gal manicure at least once, but make sure to scope out your area and find the best deal, because they can be extremely expensive. My mom and I got our nails done at Luv Lee Nails in Depew, after calling a bunch of salons near us. Luv Lee Nails offered a great deal: a gel mani and regular pedi for 50$. Mind you, the gel mani by itself is 40$, and for an extra 10$ we got to get our toes done too! Also, many online websites offer coupons for first time customers, or deal packages on sites such as groupon! So, go ahead and pamper yourself, you’ll be glad you did!
